Ondřej Škubal, Czechia: Masters Champion
ADP

What can counter Origin Forme Palkia VSTAR most effectively? That was the question coming into Worlds 2022, and Masters Champion Ondřej Škubal’s ADP deck provided the answer. Behind the offensive power of Arceus VSTAR lies a Bibarel-driven draw engine complemented by multiple Trainer cards chosen for their search and draw capabilities—and with the flexibility to discard so Bibarel has more room to draw. With Flying Pikachu VMAX and Path to the Peak to neutralize incoming attacks and Boss’s Orders to ensure no Pokémon is safe, this deck leaves the opposition toothless, targeted, and trapped!

Rikuto Ohashi, Japan: Junior Champion
Ice Rider Palkia

Rikuto Ohashi arrived in London as a League Cup Champion—and left as a World Champion thanks to masterful use of his Ice Rider Palkia deck and the ice that runs in his veins in the face of adversity. This deck’s power lies in its use of Origin Forme Palkia VSTAR’s devastating Subspace Swell attack, in conjunction with Choice Belt and a packed Bench to deliver up to 290 damage per attack and one-shot almost any Pokémon in battle. Backed by the Bench-filling Sobble and a powerful Inteleon engine for seeking the Trainer cards needed to keep attacks powered and put Pokémon in play, this deck dampens an opponent’s enthusiasm for battle. Ain’t that swell?

Deck List

  • 3× Origin Forme Palkia VSTAR
  • 3× Origin Forme Palkia V
  • 2× Inteleon

Sebastian Lashmet, USA: Senior Finalist
Cheryl Again

Senior Finalist Sebastian Lashmet celebrated his first World Championships by taking his slick, single-minded Cheryl Again deck all the way to the finals. The deck’s aim is simple—find Rapid Strike Urshifu VMAX, get it into the Active Spot, and relentlessly bring the damage. Sobble starts the process, quickly flooding the Bench with Rapid Strike Pokémon and setting up a solid base. Drizzile, Inteleon, and Octillery bring further search capabilities to boost speed—and if they can’t be found, Irida can track them all down. One question: If Urshifu spends all its time in the Active Spot, how best to deal with the relentless damage thrown at it? Oh, look…it’s Cheryl again.

Deck List

  • 2× Rapid Strike Urshifu VMAX
  • 3× Rapid Strike Urshifu V

Stunning graphics and a relatable hero
Format: Paperback
As Stuart Gibbs is one of my favorite middle grade authors, I was eager to pick up this book. It did not disappoint. Stunning graphics and a relatable protagonist make this an engaging read. Full of references to the world of superheroes, (some sneaky, some overt) there were plenty of opportunities to make inferences and share a snide chuckle with the author. This title is now on the short list for next year’s Battle of the Books in our school district. Kudos to Stuart Gibbs for the message of brain over brawn (and superpowers)!

Bruce Wayne: Not Super | Comic Review
Format: Paperback
I recently had the opportunity to check out Bruce Wayne: Not Super from DC Comics. The story is from Stuart Gibbs and the artwork is from Berat Pekmezci, and it is obviously about Batman. The middle-grade graphic novel follows a teenage Cape Crusader going to school with every other DC character. Heroes and villains all going to school together is a funny concept that I think is pulled off well here. What’s the joke about Batman? He’s just a rich kid with no powers, so what happens when he goes to a prep school with Superman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Green Arrow, etc.? Bruce has to come to grip with having no powers and how that affects his daily interactions with his classmates. Bruce’s alienation at being powerless directly conflicts with his goal of being a vigilante hero for Gotham City. His camaraderie with Dick Grayson (Robin) helps him work through his feelings on wanting to be Ferretman Batman. Aging adult characters down to young teens can come with their own difficulties, but I think Pekmezci nailed it. The artwork is very good throughout this book. It may not be everybody’s cup of tea, but I really dig these “Elseworlds” stories that place the heroes in completely weird situations. And, what’s weirder than a middle/high school full of super-powered kids! Clearly, I wasn’t the intended audience for this book, but I think those kids will have a great time reading this.

Fast read but well loved
Format: Paperback
I gave book 1 and 2 to my 9 year old and she read them both in 2 days and informed me when book 3 will be released. She said she liked the story, the characters had interesting names, and the graphics were exceptional.
